Selected Artworks

Medium: Fabric patchwork, embroidery, mixed media

My father often travelled to Benaras to photograph his series. I would accompany him and visit the holy city during my holidays. While it was a sacred place for the world, it was a familiar space and a place of great entertainment to me. The visual imageries from Benaras have had a lasting impression on me.

Benaras, from the people to its ghats, boats to rivers all have a unique character and quality like no other city in the world. On a regular day, walking through the streets, one could witness dead bodies being carried, brushing past. Back then, the city wasn’t as polluted as it is today and every other day, I would watch the stunning sunrise and sunset from the ghats. As a child, I experienced countless moments of epiphany including the subjects of mortality and the coexistence of life and death in one finite space.
